The Tywi Valley Path is calling all cyclists and nature lovers to discover 13 miles of traffic-free adventure through the heart of Carmarthenshire.
Running almost alongside the River Tywi, this revitalised former railway line between Carmarthen and Llandeilo winds through some of the county’s most breath-taking landscapes, rolling hills, riverside meadows and peaceful woodlands alive with wildlife. Along the way, you’ll pass historic castles, country parks and grand estates.
Beginning at the popular Carmarthen Museum, this welcoming, traffic-free route leads to Ffairfach, on the edge of the charming market town of Llandeilo, where inviting cafés and delicious Welsh treats provide the perfect way to round off your adventure.

Abergwili to Nantgaredig
Start your journey in Abergwili, home to the fascinating Carmarthenshire Museum and the tranquil Parc Y Esgob. Grab a coffee or light bite at Stacey’s Kitchen, then follow the path east through the lush Tywi Valley countryside towards Nantgaredig.
On the horizon, the mythical Merlin’s Hill rises said to be the resting place of the legendary wizard Merlin himself.
Once you arrive in Nantgaredig, take a well-earned pause at the welcoming Railway Hotel.
Along the Tywi & Cothi – to Llanarthne
Follow the winding rivers Tywi and Cothi as the path meanders toward Llanarthne, passing timeless views and wildlife-rich wetlands. The scenery here invites you to slow down and appreciate the valley’s natural beauty.
Rising above the landscape, the iconic Paxton’s Tower, managed by the National Trust, is a striking hilltop landmark built in honour of Admiral Nelson. The surrounding grounds are perfect for a picnic, with stunning views over the Tywi Valley.
Or treat yourself at Wright's, a delightful local spot where you can enjoy fresh produce, homemade goodies, and a light bite. A perfect pause to refuel before carrying on.
Llanarthne to Llandeilo
This final section of the Tywi Valley Path is a feast for the senses. Wander through rolling farmland and woodland where wild deer sometimes graze, with Paxton’s Tower and Dryslwyn Castle standing proud on the skyline.
At Ffairfach the path connects seamlessly to the Heart of Wales railway line, so you can easily continue your journey by train or plan a return trip.
Head into Llandeilo itself explore the vibrant market town full of boutique shops, cosy cafés, traditional pubs, and award-winning restaurants.
This final section of the Tywi Valley Path offers the perfect blend of stunning scenery, rich heritage, and lively local culture.
